Rivers and torrents of Serre-Ponçon

In Serre-Ponçon, water connects valleys, shapes landscapes, and animates the seasons. Between powerful rivers, wild torrents, and crystal-clear pools, the region offers an incredible variety of scenery and experiences. Whether you're a fan of waterside strolls, fishing, canyoning, or whitewater sports, you'll find something here to recharge your batteries... or get your adrenaline pumping.

The major rivers of the territory

The Durance

An iconic river of the Southern Alps, the Durance flows through the Serre-Ponçon region at the foot of Embrun. Its wide banks and steady current make it perfect for a variety of activities: hiking, fishing, kayaking, or rafting.

It's the ideal river for learning whitewater sports: accessible, reassuring, with just the right amount of eddies for stress-free fun. But beware, at the start of the season, when the snowmelt increases its flow, the sensations are really there! And thanks to its supply from the torrents descending from the glaciers of the Écrins massif, the Durance maintains a good flow all summer long, which guarantees the practice of activities even in drier periods.

Ubaye

Livelier, more committed, wilder: the Ubaye is the river of thrills. It rushes down the mountains with passion, carving gorges and rapids, and offers technical courses punctuated by impressive rapids, the famous "infrans." It is one of the most renowned rafting and kayaking spots in the south of France.

It is primarily aimed at sports enthusiasts or those supervised by experienced instructors, but some quieter sections are also open to amateurs.

And for those who wish to extend the adventure, the valley guides also offer trips down other emblematic rivers of the Hautes-Alpes, such as the Guisane (Briançonnais), the Gyronde (Vallouise) or the Guil (Queyras), renowned for its spectacular gorges.

  • Along the Durance, wider and calmer.
  • Or in high-altitude torrents and lakes (with specific regulations).
Fishing in the river

Please note: Fishing is subject to regulations (mandatory permits, opening periods, legal sizes), and many courses are no-kill, particularly in protected areas.
