The windsurfers' show
Lac de Serre-Ponçon, it's grandiose!
A festival of kitesurfing, foiling and windsurfing on turquoise water and glorious sunshine.
From the Savines-le-Lac bridge, the spectacle is thrilling, and the desire to join in the fun is great!
The lake is calm, the breeze is light... At some point, you have to go for it, and now's the time! It's decided, you'll take up windsurfing today.
The beaches at the tail of the reservoir are the best wind spots: Chadenas, Chanterenne beach and the freshwater beaches. Sailing schools are also located in the bays of Chanteloube and Saint-Michel, and at Savines-le-Lac . For the little ones, there are "jardin des mers" courses at Embrun, accessible from age 4! See all windsurfing and sailing professionals at the bottom of this page.
To each his own...
Off to the beach and the shores of Lac de Serre-Ponçon. Your senses are in overdrive! Windsurfers glide by, others speed by, and you can't wait to get on that board and get a taste of the sport!
Enrolling in a windsurfing course is the best way to learn the basics. A sailing school will teach you the rudiments of this sport. You'll need a bit of theory, patience and practice before you can glide into the wind.
You don't need to be a great sportsman, or have a reckless temperament, beginner boards are quite stable and you feel safe.
If records are to be believed, four inventors can claim to have invented windsurfing. While the first two were solo, the other two were a duo. Between 1960 and 1968, three versions of the board were created, but only one of them became the most popular.
Initiation...
Excitement and trepidation mingle, but quickly fade with Thierry's professionalism and humor.
After several laugh-out-loud contortions, you manage to slip into your wetsuit and tuck your feet into those magnificent neoprene booties. You're now equipped and ready to face the elements of Lac de Serre-Ponçon: water and air.
The concept is simple: one board, one rig. Stand upright, take out your sail. A game of balance and imbalance, of "splash" and laughter!
A few reassuring tips from Thierry, some nice dives and the first techniques are acquired. As the wind picks up, you accelerate!
The rig is the sail-mast-wishbone assembly. In other words, the propulsive part of the board.
The first few hours will be spent learning how to balance. Unlike surfing or stand-up paddling, you won't have to stand up straight. You need to loosen up, stay relaxed, counterbalance the sail and angle it to catch the wind.
Incredible sliding sensation
The air ruffles you, your toes are under pressure to keep your balance, you let go and fly over the waves!
GO to go around the buoy. Ouch... Going upwind is a real art. You have to feel the slightest change in the wind, adapt to the elements, and follow the same logic as the other windsurfers.
We're all connected by a feeling offun, freedom andescape, and we forget everything.
Together, with family or friends. See the others fall, race, help each other, that's the spirit of sailing: a unique sensation to share.
Your bathing suit, towel, sunscreen and balance!
Free and alive
Back on shore, intoxicated, alive and above all thirsty!
Muscles tingling, the mark of a surfer's tan is there. Proud to have taken the plunge, we want to do it again.
Windsurfing is an incredible thrill to be experienced and shared in Serre-Ponçon.
