THURSDAY, JULY 18 GAP - BARCELONNETTE

After descending to the shores of Lac de Serre-Ponçon, the course will cross the Savines-le-Lac bridge, probably escorted by numerous boats, windfoils and kite surfers. The last climb on the day's menu will be the most difficult: les demoiselles coiffées (distance and gradient to be announced). Between Savines-le-Lac and Sauze-du-Lac, the climb is short but very tough, as spectacular as the many viewpoints plunging down to the turquoise waters of Serre-Ponçon. The hillsides along the route offer ideal spots to spend the day waiting for the caravan and peloton, while taking in the spectacular views.

    PRACTICAL INFORMATION

From a sporting point of view, the côte (or climb) des demoiselles coiffées could see puncheurs tempted to win the final stage, which is accessible to non-climbers. Indeed, the rest of the route offers a vertiginous descent towards Le Lauzet-Ubaye, followed by some thirty kilometers of "false flat" climbing towards the finish line in Barcelonnette "la Mexicaine".

On the practical side, spectators won't have to travel far to get to the start in Embrun the following morning. Barcelonnette and Embrun are about an hour's drive apart, making it possible to enjoy the race in the heart of these two magnificent Ubaye and Durance valleys.

    FRIDAY, JULY 19 EMBRUN - ISOLA 2000

Every year, the Tour de France has a "queen" stage in store, and this year's 2024 is shaping up to be a fierce one. Just imagine, a positive vertical drop of almost 4000m in 145km, the roof of this edition at 2802m on the Cime de la Bonette, all before tackling the climb to Isola 2000 and after "swallowing" the Col de Vars. Dantesque! Fortunately for the riders, the Tour de France chose Embrun and the site of the lake for the start, a place of soothing beauty before a day in hell.

    PRACTICAL INFORMATION

The dummy start will take place at the Embrun lake where numerous events will be organized by ASO (organizer of the Tour de France). The race will then head towards Embrun town center for the real start, which should take place between Embrun and Châteauroux les Alpes.

On the practical side, road opening times, parking and where to see the runners will be specified on this page in the spring of 2024. The best place to see the runners before the race will be at the Embrun lake, where the traditional starting podium will allow you to see the runners one by one.
